Course Descriptions: Fall 2006

ENG 3023.50 British Literature 1765 to the Present.  Catalog Description: “Representative Works of British Literature from 1760 to Present.  Examines significant works in depth with study of authors and genres in relation to the aesthetic, historical, and cultural contexts.  Requires research with primary and secondary sources.  Three lecture hours a week.  Credit: Three hours.”  This course will be taught entirely online using Blackboard.  No orientation is required, and an online final project will be required instead of a final exam. If you have never had an online class before, I recommend that you make an appointment to meet with me at soon a possible for a one-on-one orientation.  To schedule that, contact me at rgreer@twu.edu Texts: The Norton Anthology of English Literature.  Eighth Edition.  Vol 2 (ISBN: 0-393-97491-X), Lady Audley’s Secret (Penguin. ISBN: 0140435840), and The World's Wife by Carol Ann Duffy (Faber and Faber, 1999.  ISBN: 0-571-19995-X).  Please note that this course will be taught entirely on the internet using Blackboard. No class orientation is scheduled or required for this class, and instead of an in-class final examination, students will complete a final project.  If you have never taken an online course before or used Blackboard, you may wish to schedule a private orientation session with me for about twenty to thirty minutes during my office hours (which will be posted before the course begins).  To make that orientation appointment, contact me at rgreer@twu.edu.  This private orientation is not required for anyone.  But it is recommended if you have never taken an online course before.

 

ENG 3203.02 Advanced Grammar and Composition.  Catalog Description: "Concentration on the basic terminology and procedures of English grammar, rhetoric, and composition, with intensive practice.  Prerequisites: Nine hours of English.  Three lecture hours a week.  Credit: Three hours."  Required textbooks: Rhetorical Grammar: Grammatical Choices, Rhetorical Effects (Fifth Edition) by Martha Kolln (Pearson/Longman, 2007: ISBN 0321397231;  The Allyn & Bacon Guide to Writing: Brief Edition (Fourth Edition), Edited by John D. Ramage, John C. Bean, and June Johnson (Pearson/Longman, 2006: ISBN 0-321-29151-4); The Bedford Handbook (Seventh Edition) by Diana Hacker (Bedford/St. Martin's, 2006: ISBN 0-312-41933-3).  This class will be taught in the traditional lecture and group discussion format and will include in-class writing opportunities.  The class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-2:20 p.m. in ASB 305.
